# Chat with your characters

Chat one-on-one with characters you’ve made, and let others talk to them on your posts too.

## Overview

Give a character a personality and a way of speaking, and they’ll chat in character. You can talk with your own characters to fine-tune who they are, and if you turn on chat sharing, people who read your comics can talk to them on your posts. A shared character answers based on the personality you set and the story of the comic in that post.

## Where to find it

In the Studio’s **Create** tab on the left, click **Details** on a character in your list. You’ll see the **Chat** button and the **Profile & personality** menu.

## 1. Set their personality

1. Open the character’s **Profile & personality** menu.
2. In **Persona**, describe their personality in a paragraph. It’s the most important foundation for how they chat.
3. If you like, also fill in **Age / grade**, **Traits**, **Speaking tone**, **Background story**, and **Signature lines**. Signature lines are especially helpful for nailing their voice.
4. Everything saves automatically as you type. **Traits** and **Signature lines** are added one at a time: press Enter or the + button after each one. Text left in the box without doing that isn’t saved.

> **Tip:** Use **Author's note (taboos / preferences)** for things the AI should never do and things it should lean into. A well-written personality and a few signature lines make conversations feel much more natural.

## 2. Start chatting

1. In your character list, click **Details**, then **Chat**.
2. The Community opens in a new tab, with a chat window for that character in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

3. Type a message and send it, and the character replies.

> **Note:** If a character’s **Persona** is empty, the **Chat** button won’t start a chat. Fill in **Persona** from the **Profile & personality** menu first. You can still chat with your own characters even when chat sharing is turned off.

## 3. Let others chat with them

When **Allow chat with this character** is on in the **Profile & personality** menu, other people can chat with this character on your posts. When you publish a post to the Community, this switch turns on automatically for your characters checked under **Featured characters** in the publish window ([Publish to the community](https://www.gentoon.ai/en/help/export-and-share/publish-to-community)). You can turn it off any time, but it turns back on whenever you publish with that character checked. If you don’t want to share a character, uncheck it when you publish.

> **Important:** Characters made in the agent chat (new characters created for your story or from a photo) and the starter character you got when you signed up may have chat sharing turned on from the start. If you don’t want that, turn this switch off.

## Credits

Chatting with a character uses a small amount of credits per message. The credits come from the person chatting, and only plan credits and purchased credits are used. Gifted credits aren’t used for chats. When you don’t have enough credits for your next message, the chat shows a **Out of credits** notice.

Click **Recharge credits** in the chat to top up on the **Pricing** page.

## FAQ

**My character says things that don’t fit their personality.**

The more specific the personality and sample lines, the more in character the replies get. Fill in **Persona** and **Signature lines**; even a few example lines make a big difference.

**How do I pick up a conversation where I left off?**

Click the same character’s **Chat** button again to continue your previous conversation.
