# Split a page into panels

Draw lines on an empty page to set up your own panels before drawing, and Zennyang will plan the scenes to fit them.

## Overview

When you put several panels on one page, you can decide their shapes yourself. Just draw lines across the page to split it, slanted lines included. You can also start from a ready-made layout, or upload a panel layout you sketched on paper and let GenToon find the panels. Once the panels are set, Zennyang splits the scenes to fit them.

> **Note:** Splitting a page doesn’t cost any credits. Drawing it costs the usual price of one image.

## Where to find it

- With the **Agent Mode** tab open on the right, look at the panel tools (the vertical strip of buttons) to the right of an empty page that hasn’t been drawn yet. The scissors button is **Panel layout**; hover over it to see its name.
- You can also open the same window from the scenario card, by choosing **Draw your own panels** when you pick a page’s panel layout.

## Split a page and draw it

1. Open the **Agent Mode** tab on the right.
2. In the panel tools to the right of an empty page, click the scissors-shaped **Panel layout** button. The panel editor opens.

3. Drag across the page to draw a line. The line runs to the edges of every panel it crosses and splits them. Lines that are nearly horizontal or vertical snap straight; any other line keeps the slant you drew. Hold Shift while dragging to snap to 45-degree steps.
4. Don’t want to start from scratch? Pick a similar layout under **Start from a layout** and adjust it. You can also select a panel and click **Merge with the next panel** to join panels.

5. Set the **Gap between panels** and the **Reading order**. To set the reading order yourself, click **Set the order myself** and tap the panels in the order they should be read.
6. Click **Use these panels**. The page now shows how many panels it will be drawn in.
7. Send your story in the chat. Zennyang plans the scenario to fit these panels, and from there you review the scenario card and draw as usual.

> **Tip:** Drew a line in the wrong place? Click **Undo** to remove lines one at a time, or **Start over** to begin again. A page can be split into 2 to 12 panels, and the editor lets you know if a panel gets too small.

## Upload a layout you drew on paper

1. In the panel editor, click **Upload a panel layout** and choose your picture.
2. Your picture is laid faintly under the page as an underlay. If panels are found, they’re drawn on top of it; check them, and if something’s off, draw more lines, or select a panel and click **Merge with the next panel**. Lines you’ve already drawn can’t be dragged to a new spot. If no panels are found, draw the lines over the underlay yourself. The **Underlay** button hides or shows the underlay.
3. When it looks right, click **Use these panels**.

> **Tip:** Detection works best with black lines on white paper.

## Change or remove the panels

Until a page with panels set is drawn, **Change panels** and **Remove panels** buttons appear at the bottom of it. Use the first to split it again, or the second to draw the page without your own panels. Once the page is drawn, the panels are part of the picture and can’t be changed, and regenerating it uses the same panel layout.

## FAQ

**I don’t see the **Panel layout** button.**

The **Panel layout** button is a scissors icon with no text, and it only appears in the panel tools of an empty, not-yet-drawn page while the **Agent Mode** tab is open on the right. It won’t show on a page that’s already drawn or while the **Single Panel** tab is open. If you have no empty page, click **Add Page** at the bottom of the canvas to add one.

**Will the art follow my panel shapes exactly?**

Not always exactly: Zennyang asks for the art to follow your lines, but each drawing can place or size the panels a little differently. Very small or thin slanted panels hold less of the scene and are occasionally left out.

**Can I split pages in the app?**

You can split pages in the app too: use the scissors button in the message box to set the panels for the next page you draw.
