How to Make Your Own Manhwa (Even If You Can’t Draw)

What makes a comic feel like a manhwa?

Manhwa is the Korean word for comics, and today it usually means the full-color, vertical-scroll webtoon format you read on your phone. A few habits make a page instantly read as manhwa:

• Vertical rhythm: one strong moment per panel, with space between beats so the scroll does the timing.
• Big emotional close-ups: glowing eyes, sweat drops, a jaw that drops a little too far.
• Genre furniture: status windows, rank letters, regression timers, royal ballrooms.
• A hook in the last panel that makes you want the next episode.

You don’t need all of them. You need to know which ones your story uses, because that is what you will describe to the tool.

How do you come up with a manhwa premise?

Don’t start with a world. Start with one sentence that has a twist in it. Tropes are fine: readers love a familiar setup that goes somewhere unexpected.

Our premise: an S-rank hunter who has cleared a hundred dungeons gets defeated by his alarm clock.

That sentence already tells you the genre (hunter system), the characters (one overconfident hunter) and the punchline (Monday wins). If your premise needs a paragraph to explain, it’s probably three stories. Pick one.

How do you keep your characters looking the same?

The most common reason AI-made comics look amateur is that the main character changes face between panels. Generic image generators start from zero every time, so your hero’s hair, eyes and outfit drift.

In GenToon you save a character once (name, look, outfit, or even a photo) and every panel you generate references that same character. For this example the hero was simply “Young Hunter: black messy hair, violet eyes, black shirt, later a rumpled black suit.” That was enough to keep him recognizable across four very different shots: asleep, smug, panicking, sprinting.

Tip: write three or four visual details that never change (hair, eyes, one clothing item) and let everything else vary with the scene.

How do you write a manhwa panel script?

Before generating anything, write each panel as one line: what we see, where the camera is, and who says what. Short dialogue reads better in bubbles. If a line doesn’t fit on a sticky note, cut it.

Notice the structure: setup, confidence, reversal, payoff. Four panels is the shortest length that still has a turn, which is why it works so well on Instagram and in webtoon previews.

How do you generate the panels and fix them?

Paste the premise and the panel script into the studio chat of the AI manhwa maker, pick an art style (we used a hunter-fantasy style with glowing effects) and generate. Where should you post your manhwa?

Match the canvas to the platform before you generate, not after:

• Instagram feed: 4:5 portrait panels as a carousel. Put the cover (panel 1) first and the punchline last.
• TikTok or Reels: 9:16. A slideshow of four panels with a two-second hold on the last one works well.
• Webtoon-style platforms: vertical panels stacked in order. Check each platform’s current rules on AI-assisted work before you upload.

Whatever you choose, keep the episode short at first. Posting four good panels every few days teaches you more than one perfect chapter you never finish.

What can’t AI do for you yet?

Honest limits, so you plan around them:

• Precise poses and complex hands still need a few regenerations.
• Dense action sequences read better split into more panels than crammed into one.
• Results vary between tries, and text is drawn as part of the image, so read every bubble before you post.
• Comics made on plans below PRO carry a small GenToon watermark.
• The story is yours. The tool can suggest scenes, but the premise, the joke and the reason anyone comes back for episode two are still a writer’s job.

That last point is the good news. If you have always had stories and no way to show them, the skill you already have is the one that matters.
