Overview

On GenToon, each comic is a project. A project keeps the panels and speech bubbles on your canvas together with your conversation with Zennyang, so when you reopen it, the chat is right where you left it.

Where to find them

Your projects are collected on the Projects page in your profile menu (your profile picture at the top right of the site). Inside the Studio, you start and save projects from the top bar.

Start a new project

  1. In the Studio’s top bar, click the + New Project button to the right of the ratio buttons. The new project opens in a new tab, and your current work stays as it is. In a narrow window, the button may show only + or be hidden. If you can’t find it, use the next option.

  2. Or click Create New Comic at the top of the Projects page.

  3. A new project starts with two empty panels in a 2:3 ratio. The title box above the canvas is empty and just shows Enter a title. If you don’t name it, it appears as Untitled Project in your Projects list. You can change the ratio in the top bar before anything is drawn.

Open a project

  1. Click Projects in your profile menu. The Studio doesn’t show the profile menu, so if you’re in the Studio, save with Save Project, then click the GenToon logo at the top left to go to the home page.

  2. Click the Comic Space tab to see your projects, most recently edited first. They don’t all load at once, so click Load More at the bottom of the list to see more. The search box only looks through the projects already loaded on the page. If an older project doesn’t turn up, click Load More to load more, then search again.

  3. Click the picture on a card to open that project in the Studio. Clicking the card’s title doesn’t open it. It opens a box for renaming it instead.

Rename a project

  1. Click the title above the canvas in the Studio. If the project has no name yet, it’s the box that says Enter a title.

  2. Type the new name, then press Enter or click anywhere else. When a green check mark (✓) briefly appears at the right end of the title, it’s saved. For a new project that isn’t in your list yet, the name is saved along with the project the first time the project is saved.

  3. In a saved project, the title saves itself as soon as you pause typing. Esc only goes back to the last saved title, so to get the old name back, type it again. If you leave the title empty and click away, nothing is saved and the previous title comes back.

You can also rename a project by clicking the title on its card on the Projects page.

How saving works

  • Once a project has been saved, your changes are saved automatically shortly after you stop editing.
  • To save right now, click Save Project. When you have unsaved changes, the button has a purple outline.
  • If you try to close the page with unsaved changes, your browser will ask you to confirm. Leaving the Studio through the GenToon logo doesn’t ask, so if the save button has a purple outline, click it first.

Delete a project

  1. On the Projects page, hover over the project’s card. A ⋮ button appears in its top-right corner (on touch screens it’s always shown). Click it.

  2. Choose Move to Trash and confirm. The project isn’t gone right away. It moves to the Trash.

  3. To delete several at once, go to the Comic Space tab, click Select, pick the cards, then click the delete button. They also move to the Trash.

FAQ

Can I duplicate a whole project?
There’s no way to duplicate a whole project right now. You can duplicate individual panels with the Duplicate panel button in the panel tools. To reuse art you drew in another project, use the Import panel button in the panel tools to bring it in one panel at a time, at no credit cost. Only art with the same ratio as the current project is listed, so in a new project, set the ratio in the top bar before you draw.
A project I just made isn’t showing up in Projects.
A new project only shows up in the list after you send Zennyang a message, something is drawn, or you save it. Click Save Project in the Studio once. A new project made in a team workspace goes into that workspace, not your personal list, so switch to that workspace on the Projects page to find it.
Where are the projects I share with my team?
Projects in a team workspace show up when you switch to that workspace. See Team workspaces.
